Practical Preparation Course Descriptions


*Classes marked with an asterisk are usually offered every other year.

**Classes marked with two asterisks are offered less frequently or on an as needed basis.



Pr 111, 112 Personal Evangelism

two semesters, one hour per semester

The Spirit-filled life of the soul winner with an emphasis on Scripture memorization and the methods, message, and means of presenting the gospel to an individual along with the nature and techniques of personal discipleship.

**Pr 121 Spiritual Preparation (Same as Mi 121)

one semester, one hour

An analysis of various aspects of the ministry: call to the ministry; spiritual, mental, and physical qualifications for the ministry; developing and maintaining spirituality in the ministry; prayer life of the minister; avoiding burnout; and principles of leadership.

**Pr 122 Practical Preparation (Same as Mi 122)

one semester, one hour

An analysis of various aspects of the pastoral position: the work of the pastor; the pastor and his family; scheduling the day’s activities; weddings, funerals, baptisms, the Lord’s table; relations with other pastors; the pastor and his books; and the call to the local church.

**Pr 131 Church Planting (Same as Mi 131)

one semester, one hour

An analysis of the qualifications of a church planter: how to choose the place for church planting, the principles of church planting, planning for the first service, the securing of facilities, the use of small groups in church planting, financing the new work, and mobilizing and organizing the people.

**Pr 141 Administration (Same as Mi 141)

one semester, one hour

An analysis of the practical aspect of hiring and leading a church staff, the second man position, selection and relationship with deacons, business meetings, constitutions, budgets, finances, and motivation of people.

**Pr 142 Promotion and Outreach (Same as Mi 142)

one semester, one hour

An analysis of the practical application of community promotion and outreach using the Sunday School, small group ministry, children’s programs, advertising, missions conferences, stewardship programs, evangelism, special days, visitation, soul winning, and ministries for men and women.

*Pr 151 Mentoring and Leadership (Same as Mi 151)

one semester, one hour

A study in understanding the basic elements of leadership to enable students to find lifelong mentors and to learn to become a mentor for others.

Pr 174, 274, 374 Practical Evangelism

each summer, one hour per summer

A practical 10-week summer extension course for all men and women who expect to reenroll in International Baptist College for the following fall semester. Assigned Bible readings, various book readings, practical field experience, and detailed written bi-weekly reports are required.

**Pr 176 Seminar in Specialized Church Ministries

one semester, one or two hours

Studies in specific topics relevant to local church ministry that deserve special emphasis in addition to that received in the regular curriculum, such as Jewish Roots and Evangelism.

**Pr 222 Advanced Discipleship

one semester, one hour

A study in the development of personal discipleship skills and discipleship training to biblically deal with the personal and interpersonal problems of life.

**Pr 273, 373 Field Study

(Prerequisite: Administrative permission required)

January term, one hour per term

Practical experiences and exposure to provide an overview of the ministry and some hands-on experience with opportunity for limited apprenticeship.

*Pr 321, 322 Homiletics

two semesters, two hours per semester

Studies in the analysis, preparation, and delivery of expository, topical, and textual sermon material. Practical discussions on Bible study methods, the parts of a sermon, effective communication in preaching, and filing of materials.

*Pr 421 Youth Work

one semester, two hours

Studies in the basic philosophy, principles and goals of the total youth program with attention given to counseling teens and parents and solving specific teen problems along with suggested applications for Sunday School, Daily Vacation Bible School, camping, retreats, and individual activities.

**Pr 473 Field Practice

(Prerequisite: Administrative permission required)

January term, two to four hours

A practicum of ministry experiences and responsibilities dealing with problems as they are encountered. The student, under the supervision of an experienced advisor, will be given assigned responsibilities with assignments made on an individual basis.

*Pr 481 Church Business Management and Administration

one semester, two hours

A study of the local church’s constitution, governmental organization, budgeting, simple accounting methods, financial ethics, purchasing, financing building projects, insurance, advertising, salaries, pensions, and Social Security.

*Pr 482 Christian School Administration (Same as Ed 482)

one semester, two hours

A survey of the major areas of Christian school administration: philosophy, principles of operation, methodology of instruction, curriculum development, supervision, physical plant, school law, and various management areas.

Pr L13, L14 Evangelistic Field Work

one semester each, one hour per semester

Field experience in personal evangelism under supervision and with evaluation for the purpose of improving methodology, technique, and style.

**Pr L83 Spiritual Leadership

January term, one hour

A study of the biblical teachings on leadership, including principles, responsibilities, and practices.
