Church Music Emphasis

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible and Christian Service with an emphasis in Church Music is a four-year, 133-hour program. It includes the following minimums:

Bible and Theology, 30 hours
General Education, 43 hours
Christian Service Core, 14 hours
Christian Service Methods (music), 41 hours
General Electives, 5 hours

The program includes classroom instruction, private lessons, and group participation. The curriculum consists of courses in music theory, ear training and sight singing, music history, hymnology, conducting, congregational songleading, and primary and secondary performance proficiency.

Mission

The mission of the Music Department at IBC is to equip students to glorify God by serving in a local church in teaching, performing, writing, and arranging music and administrating music programs.

Purposes

The Church Music Emphasis exists for the following reasons:

  1. To teach a submission to God's Word and His will in areas of personal and professional training.
  2. To develop an awareness of the divisive musical issues confronting churches and a biblical pattern for musical unity within the local church.
  3. To teach a keen awareness of areas of service to the local church through music.
  4. To grasp administrative tools that aid the music programs of the local church.

Aims

The aims of the music department of International Baptist College are to help students achieve the above stated purposes and mission by assuring that the students will demonstrate

  1. an understanding and appreciation of the historical background of the Western culture of music,
  2. an understanding and appreciation of the historical background of the international body of Protestant hymnody,
  3. a working knowledge in the historical "common practice" period of music theory (from the late Baroque through the late Romantic periods), and an acquaintance with early music practice and twentieth century techniques, and
  4. the ability to perform proficiently on one or more instruments.
