Setting and Story

1892, St. Olde's College, Oxford, England

College undergrads Jack and Charley invite two young ladies to their rooms for luncheon in order to "meet Charley's aunt from Brazil, where the nuts come from." But, alas, the millionaire aunt sends word that she will have to defer her visit a few days. What is to be done? They cannot host the girls without a chaperone! The dear young things must not be compromised! But neither will the boys give up the opportunity of declaring their undying love. When their friend shows up announcing that he is auditioning for the college play, it appears that the problem is solved. Lord Babberly ("Babbs"), who has "never acted a day in his life," is forced into a black satin skirt, old-fashioned lace fichu, and wig! As CHARLEY'S AUNT, this old frump is smacked around by the boys, hugged and kissed by the girls, pursued for marriage by Jack's father and Amy's crabby old uncle, and meets Charley's real aunt when she shows up, assuming another name! The hilarious confusion can only be sorted out when Babbs puts his suit back on. Then, of course, the boys get the girls, two long lost couples are reunited, and all the world is right again.
