Songs in the Night
May 4, 2007 - Pastor David Stertzbach II

King David knew what it was to go through difficult times. Imagine your own father-in law trying to kill you! In Psalm 77:6a he says, "I call to remembrance my song in the night." Of course, Christ Himself is the true "Song in the night". He comforts us when we are afraid, exhausted, out-of-sorts. But Christ also gives a "song in the night" in a literal sense.

Because we are made in the image of a musical God (Zechariah 9:14; Zephaniah 3:17), we are musical creatures. God "blows His trumpet" and sings over us. In fact, all of His creation is organized in the same way that musical sounds are organized. And we, as His creation, are designed to respond to music.

There are times in our lives when our spirits are particularly receptive to spiritual music. This time of "night" may be the darkening of one’s earthly days, that is, his immanent death. It may be "the valley of the shadow of death", when death touches someone close to us. It may be times of great sorrow or trial or illness. But during these times God’s music resonates within us, perhaps because we are more "in tune" with Him.

Our music at Tri-City is designed to focus our attention on spiritual things. Whether it is a choir song, an instrumental number, a "special music" selection or even one of the congregational songs, keep your ears (and hearts) open for the message that God has for you. It may be that at some point in your life, God will call to your remembrance one of these songs. Then you too can be comforted by your own "song in the night" from The Song Himself.
